Hawker Hurricane Mk. I

The Hurricane Mk. I was responsible for the destruction of more enemy aircraft during the Battle of Britain (July-October 1940) than any other aircraft or ground weapon. It is credited with 656 enemy fighters and bombers (against 529 for the Spitfires).

Designed by Sir Sydney Camm, the Hurricane was an evolution of the earlier Hawker Fury bi-plane.

Although slower than the Spitfire and the opposing Messerschmitt BF109s the Hurricane could out turn all of them. The Hurricane was equipped with eight Browning .303 machine guns.

1,715 Hurricane Mk. I were taken on charge by RAF Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.
