PR (Photo Reconnaissance) versions of the Spitfire relied on high speed and a special 'PRU' Blue paint scheme to avoid enemy interception. All armament was removed to save weight and increase speed/range.
The product includes a designer swing tag featuring an original photo strip showing theMöhne Dam on the morning of 17th May, 1943.
The breach in the dam wall caused by the Lancasters of 617 Squadron RAF during their "Dam Busters" raid (Operation Chastise) the night before can clearly be seen.
The photo was taken by Flying Officer Jerry Fray from an unarmed Spitfire PR Mk. IX of 542 Squadron RAF operating from RAF Benson. Sortie D/0578. Frame 5110.
