Lysander Landing Site Video

Posted on enero 06 2017

In October 2016 whilst researching our Lysander design we flew down to the Loire Valley in France to find the actual site of secret Landing Zone Gide, verify the latitude/longitude co-ordinates and measure it's dimensions.

This site was used for several clandestine SOE Lysander missions - the most noteworthy of which was Operation Battering Ram on the night of September 12/13th, 1943.

Led by Sqn. Leader Hugh Verity three Lysanders from RAF 161 Squadron (SD) successfully inserted eight agents and recovered another seven. The other two Lysander pilots were Jim McCairns and Peter Vaughan-Fowler.

The Lysanders flew under cover of darkness navigating using just map, compass and stop watch. Having found the small landing site they made their approaches using a system of three lamps shone from the ground by members of the French Resistance.

In total Verity, McCairns and Vaughan-Fowler were on the ground for a total of only nine minutes before returning to their forward operating base at RAF Tangmere on the south coast of England.
