Mikoyan Gurevich MiG 15 bis
Aviators Lounge TV: Mig v Sea Fury Video
The MiG-15 was the first Russian swept wing jet fighter that entered service in 1949, with the MiG-15 bis upgrade appearing in 1950.
Original problems with adapting German jet engine technology were overcome when the British sold the Soviets several Rolls Royce Nene jet engines. The Russians promptly reverse engineered these to produce the Klimov RD-45 engine which transformed the MiG.
The small, powerful and agile MiG-15 was primarily designed to intercept US bombers and packed a punch from two 23mm canon and one 37mm canon.
It’s appearance in “Mig Alley” over the Yalu River bordering North Korea and China compelled the US to deploy the new F-86 Sabre to Korea. The aerial combats between Mig-15s and F-86s marked the beginning of jet v jet combat.
