Schneider Trophy Polo Shirt

£55.00 GBP

Supermarine S.6b

The Schneider Trophy was race for seaplanes held between 1913 and 1931. France, Italy, USA and Great Britain all competed for the trophy.

Great Britain won in 1927, 1929 and 1931 with the R J Mitchell designed Supermarine S.5, S.6 and S.6b respectively. The third win in five years entitled GB to retain the trophy indefinitely and it is now displayed at the Science Museum in London.

The Supermarine S.6b was the zenith of R J Mitchell's racing seaplane designs. Together with his collaboration with Rolls Royce on the 'R' (Racing) Type engine it laid the foundation for the later design of the iconic Supermarine Spitfire fighter.

The 1931 race was won by Supermarine S.6b, S1995 piloted by Flight Lieutenant Jonathan Boothman of the RAF's 'High Speed Flight' at an average speed of 340.08 mph (547.31 km/h) over a triangular course over the Solent.
