DOUGLAS DC-3DC-3 stands for (”Douglas Commercial Design 3”).
In the thirties DC-3 airliners revolutionised coast to coast travel in the USA - ultimately resulting in airlines replacing trains for coast to coast journeys.
The DC-3 had a cruise speed of 180 kts, capacity of 21-32 passengers or 6,000 lbs (2,700 kg) of cargo and a range of 1,500 miles (2,400 km).
DC-3s are still flying in commercial and military service today.
